Better roads information campaign starts

A public information campaign about £250 million of work to improve Liverpool’s highway network is getting underway.

Using print, broadcast, web and social media, ‘Better Roads’ will keep motorists, residents and visitors up to date with when and where major schemes are taking place, show alternative routes and explain why schemes are needed.

Over the next four years, a wide range of work is taking place on routes which carry huge volumes of traffic, are of the most strategic importance to the city and are in poor condition.

It includes road resurfacing and widening, junction improvements, changes to public realm such as new pavements, new signage and traffic lights and giving more of a priority to pedestrians and cyclists.

It not only make much needed improvements to the city’s roads, but will also significantly reduce the highways maintenance historic backlog, delivering major savings for the city in the future.

The microsite www.liverpool.gov.uk/betterroads includes a map of the city with flags highlighting each of the roadworks and essential information about when they are taking place, how it will affect motorists, businesses and residents and diversion routes. There is also a Facebook page to ‘like’ and you can follow it on Twitter @betterroadsliv

Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This campaign is designed to keep people as informed about the work we are doing and how they can take steps to minimise the disruption it causes to their journeys.

“We can’t promise that we can stop people being delayed, but what we can do is let them know when and where the work is taking place, so they can use an alternative route or allow more time for their journey.

“It is also about explaining to people that works aren’t being carried out in isolation but are part of a much bigger picture which have economic benefits for the city. Ultimately this is about ensuring people and goods can move efficiently and make our city a more desirable place to live, work, visit and do business.”
